Medical Coding Specialist


Department: Billing

Wage/Hour Status: 13-17/hour

Job Summary:

The medical coding specialist is tasked with allocating procedure and diagnosis codes for insurance billing. It is also his or her responsibility to review claims, confirming that assigned codes comply with existing legal and insurance regulations. The coding specialist is also responsible for gathering medical records research and corresponding with insurance companies if a claim is denied due to incorrect coding.


Reports To: Dr. Aylin Ozdemir

Supervises: Billing team as applicable

Essential Responsibilities:

-          Proper coding of all treatments and patient visits

-          On  time billing of all patient treatments and visits

-          Responses to all payment denials from all patient treatments and visits

-          Filing of all appeals of all patient treatments and visits

-          Ongoing coding review of all patient treatments and visits

-          Insurance contract reviews and negotiations


Minimum Qualifications:

-          Member of American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) preferred

-          Well versed in medical terminology

-          Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology as well as medical law

-          Strong communication skills



-          Two (2) years of experience in medical coding

-          Associates degree in medical coding, healthcare information technology, or similar

Experience: 2 years minimum


Licensure:  Certified Professional Coder (CPC)


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Detail oriented and experienced in the field of billing
